5 Things I wish someone would have told me before becoming an AuPair

First of all, I would like to say that I loved the experience as an AuPair and the opportunities it gave me. I met loads of new lovely people, got to experience London in a way a tourist never gets to, and I visited a few more other cities in England ( BrightonBournemouthBirmingham, etc).
But there are a few things that come with the job as an AuPair that no one really talks about. The job is a lot harder than most of you guys would imagine. It is now around the time of the year where a lot of German students decide on what to do after their graduation. For all of you who are thinking about becoming an AuPair, I would love to list a few points that can help you decide whether you would like to become an AuPair or not.
And for all of you guys reading this post purely out of curiosity what my life was like in London, enjoy! :)

What are set work hours? As an AuPair one lives at their work place. It is usually pretty clear when one has to work and when one is off. I usually woke up at seven, worked till eight and was then off until around 1Pm or 3Pm, depending on when the boys finished school. But from then on, my work day was an open-end. It was normal for me to finish around half seven or eight but it all depended on when my host-mom got the kids to go to sleep or when my host-dad got back from work.
At the same time, I had the week-end off. But it was a common thing for me to wake up, go down-stairs and still be asked to help out with the kids a little bit. It didn't really bother me and I would have never said no but living at your work place means that your host-parents can ask you to work whenever they want to and you are never really finished.

You're basically a teen-mom. When the concept AuPair was born, it meant that one would be more of a mothers-help than anything else. One would get small duties (like doing laundry, cooking every now and then) and the work hours weren't that much either. One would maybe help an hour in the morning and three to four in the afternoon. But other than that one would have a lot of spare time to explore and meet up with friends.
Nowadays being an AuPair is basically the same as a nanny. Most host-parents leave for work early and come back late in the evening, leaving the AuPair alone with the kids for basically the entire day. They expect you to do everything a parent would usually do with the kids (homework, eating, school runs, play-dates, hobbies, etc.) and have everything scheduled perfectly. Most host-parents also expect you to do the laundry and clean the house regularly as well - I was lucky that mine had a cleaning lady. But still I always worked 35+ hours each week.

One's social life gets rather non-existent. Don't get me wrong, I have great friends in London and we went out regularly but the time-frame during which one can do so is rather limited. It's either in the morning when the kids are in school or when the kids are asleep in evening - if you don't have to babysit. There were days where I would leave the house at half eight in the evening to meet up with friends at Starbucks or in a pub just so that I did not spend my day with just the boys.

Or sleep for that matter. Another thing is sleep or just simple me-time. During the five months that I was in London, I did not once have a day during which I got to actually sleep in or just do nothing. Either one is working or using the time off to meet up with friends. Not once did I regret choosing friends and going out over sleep but I am now realizing that this time was also very stressful.
Sometimes my AuPair friends and I would be in a pub on a Friday night at 12PM and thinking about just going home and falling into our beds instead of actually heading out to the next pub and enjoying our selfs a bit more - basically the same problems parents probably have! ;)

True friends are always there for you. One thing that I learned during that time is that true friends are always around if you need them. They accept the choices you make and always support what's best for you. There were so many days that were just plain crappy and I needed someone to talk to. I would just text one of them and we would meet no matter what time in a Starbucks or pub and all just complain about our days! ;)

Even though most of this sounds rather negative, I would never ever not recommend becoming an AuPair. One should just know that it's not always fun and games and that it actually really is a tough job.

An Update on my Life

It's been almost a week now that I packed everything up again and arrived back in Germany. To be honest, I have still not finished unpacking my suitcase and I am currently trying (yup, just trying!) to rearrange my room. Maybe get a bit of new paint or just move the furniture around. I'm not sure yet but I definitely need a bit of change! My room has been exactly the same for the past five years and everyone who knows me knows that I NEED change every once in a while - mostly my hair color ;).

Obviously I also have to spend my time a bit more useful than just sitting around and waiting for uni to start in summer. Luckily there's quite some jobs to be done around Frankfurt and I have applied for a couple of them. So keep your fingers crossed that I'll be lucky enough to get a job!
I'm not quite sure yet where I want to study. For quite some time I was convinced that I wanted to study in England. Now that my application is turned in and I already received three offers, I'm not actually certain anymore. March is the deadline for me to accept a place in the UK and until then, I have time to make up my mind what I really want.

The past few days were spent mostly with my neighbor aka. one of my best friends since Primary school. We had a lot of catching up to do, went ice skating, shopping and so on.
On Sunday we also went out with my entire family on my dad's side because my uncle turned 70 during the last week.

See ya soon, London!

While writing this blog post, I am currently sat at Heathrow airport waiting for my Gate to be announced. On one hand, I am the happiest person on planet earth to be seeing my family again and to know that I’ll be able to spend loads of time with them and all of my friends in Germany. But on the other hand it’s quite sad to leave so many new found friends behind.

I had a blast during my - almost - last two weeks in London. The boys were off school and we were able to spend some quality time together without having all of the usual school stress. I also met up with loads of my friends almost every evening. The weekend was especially busy. On Saturday I first went to Camden and Primrose Hill with Julia, then went on to watch a ballet performance in the Royal Opera House. By the time I got to Fulham to meet up with three other friends to have a night out, it was almost 11PM. By the time I got home it was probably around 3AM.
The next day, I met up with Julia again. This time to go to Oxford street for some shopping. Loads of fun but I didn't really find much that l actually wanted to spend my money on. That night we went to the same pub in Fulham but had a bit of a more quiet evening with a few drinks but not much dancing.

I'll be back in London quite soon, so saying good-bye wasn't that hard. But I'm already missing my girls and all the fun times we experienced in London.

See ya soon! - Svenja x

5 Things I love about London

Primrose Hill. Ever since I set foot on Primrose Hill, I fell in love with the place. For one, the view one has on top of Primrose Hill is a one of a kind. One can see all over London and its most important and prestigious sights. At the same time, Primrose Hill itself is such a lovely neighborhood: all the super expensive houses, small lovely cafes and the little park.

Public Transport. As boring as this sounds: I have never experienced better public transport anywhere. There is no sat time for busses or tubes. The bus that comes closest to my house runs every six to ten minuets for example. If I get to a busstop and I have to wait longer than five minuets, it'll feel like forever to me. One has to say that hopping on a bus in central London will probably cost you an extra twenty minuets as least but one can always take the tube as well.
Plus, even at night the busses run pretty regularly.

Green Spots. In London there are parks everywhere. Seriously! Sometimes  they are rather tiny (like this little square just next to Oxford Street) and sometimes they are gigantic (like Hyde Park). But no matter the size I love them! I love living in one of the biggest cities in the world but these parks can make you forget the entire stress of the day.

Diversity. Never before moving to London have I seen people from different nationalities live this easily next to each other. There are about twenty houses in our close and they host probably over ten different nationalities. I don't know why but for whatever reason integrity works better in London than I have ever seen it in Germany.

Street Music.  No matter where you go in London you'll always be followed by music. I love getting off the tube and being greeted by music, or just strolling down a shopping street and having a bit of background music. Or visiting some of the most important sights and still find the most awesome street musicians playing close by. Let's face it, the list is endless.

Primrose Hill.

Alleine schon in unserem "Viertel" stehen 20 Häuser in denen bestimmt 10 verschieden Nationalitäten wohnen.

Happy Friday! - Svenja x

Sad news...

When I left Germany this summer to take on this job in London, I would have never thought that I had to write anything like what I have to now. This decision was made about a month ago and the reason why I am only now writing about this is that I wanted to tell most of you guys in person. But for all of you, who I did not have the chance to talk to this winter break: I am moving back to Germany next week on Thursday. I do not want to go into detail about any of this on this blog out of respect for my privacy and my host-families. All that is important is that we still have a very good relationship and we'll definitely stay in contact.

I already have plans for what I will be doing when I am back in Germany and I will tell you more about that in a new post. Since I really enjoyed writing on this block, I will keep up with writing regularly and there definitely are some exciting things coming up.

For now, I'll be enjoying my - for now - last week in London.

Happy Wednesday! - Svenja x

Thank you, 2014!

For me the start of 2014 was a rather tough one. I had to spend the first two months on crutches and the road back to normal was quite long and hard. Looking back now, 2014 has taught me so much. The one thing that is the most important to me now, is to look out for my own well-being, my happiness, and my health. I would love to thank every single person that stood by my side and helped me make important decisions throughout this year. No matter if I have known you forever or if I have met you this year: you mean the world to me!

Southside Festival 2014 | June

2014 was a year of changes. I had to start looking for a new hobby, since dance wasn't an option anymore after my surgery. I finished school, moved to a new city and met loads of new friends!
Here are some of my favorite pictures and memories of this year.

Way too much time spent on crutches! Viel zu lange auf Krücken gelaufen!

Our last day of school ever! Unser letzter Schultag!

Prom 2014. Abschlussball 2014.

Vacationing in Croatia. Urlaub in Kroatien.

 Visiting Munich. Städtetrip nach München.

Moving to London. Umzug nach London.
